Location alerts on the lock screen

Your pass comes up on their phone when they are near your shop, your office or your stand.

Location alerts put your wallet pass on somebody's lock screen when they are near a place you choose. You add the places, one or up to 10, and on an iPhone you write the line it shows and choose how near they must be.

Each place: a pin, a name, and the line the lock screen shows there.
In plain words

What is a location alert?

It is a place, pinned on a map, that your wallet pass knows about. When a phone holding your pass comes close to that place, the phone brings your pass up on its lock screen, so the person sees you at the moment they are near your door.

On an iPhone you write the line the lock screen shows for each place, such as a welcome or a reason to come in, and you choose how near a person must be, from 60 metres to 1,000 metres. On an Android phone, Google Wallet shows its own notice near the place, and Google decides both the distance and the words.

Location alerts ride on the wallet pass, so they need Pro and the wallet pass, and then the location add-on: one place, or up to 10. Nobody who has not saved your pass is ever shown anything, and the person's phone must be allowed to use its location for the wallet.

Where the alert appears

The alert is the phone's own: it comes from the pass already in their wallet, not from a message we send, so it uses none of your message credits.

On an iPhone

  • Apple Wallet, on the lock screen
  • Your own line for each place
  • How near: 60 metres to 1,000 metres

On an Android phone

  • Google Wallet
  • Google's own notice
  • Google's own distance

Up to 10 places on one pass

Add your shop, your office, a stand at a fair or a branch in another city. Each place is a pin you paste from any map, a name, and on an iPhone a line of its own. A change to a place reaches the phones that hold your pass by itself, without waiting for you to publish.

You choose how near, on an iPhone

Set how close a person must be before your pass comes up: 60 metres for a shop door, 1,000 metres for a whole neighbourhood. One setting covers all your places. Android phones use the distance Google chooses.

Nothing to send, nothing to spend

A location alert is the phone doing the work: it notices where it is and shows the pass it already holds. You write the line once and it waits in the wallet until the moment it is needed.

  • Uses none of your message credits
  • Reaches only the people who saved your pass
  • Works beside the notifications you send

Four steps

How to set up a location alert

Step 01

Turn on the wallet pass

Location alerts ride on your wallet pass, so start with Pro and the wallet pass, then add the location add-on for one place or more.

Step 02

Open Wallet and add a place

In your dashboard, open Wallet and add a place: paste its link from the map you use, or type its two numbers, and write the line an iPhone shows there.

Step 03

Choose how near

Set the distance for iPhones. Android phones use the distance Google chooses.

Step 04

Let people save your pass

People add your pass from your card. From then on their phone brings it up whenever they are near one of your places.

Questions about location alerts

Which plan do location alerts need?

Pro with the wallet pass, and then the location add-on: one place, or up to 10 places. You add it in Billing.

Do location alerts work on Android?

Yes, through Google Wallet. Google shows its own notice near your place and decides the distance and the words, so the line you write is the one iPhones show.

Does the person have to allow anything?

They must have saved your pass, and their phone must be allowed to use its location for the wallet. Nobody who has not saved your pass is ever shown anything.

Does a location alert use my message credits?

No. The phone brings forward a pass it already holds; nothing is sent from us, so no credit is used.

Can I change a place later?

Yes. Move the pin, change the line or remove the place, and the phones that hold your pass pick up the change on their own.

Your turn

Be on their phone when they are near

Turn on the wallet pass, pin your places and write the line. The next time somebody who saved your pass walks past, it comes up.
