vCard generator

A contact file in the format every phone, mail program and address book understands.

A vCard is the .vcf file a phone or a mail program reads to add somebody to its contacts. Fill in the name, the numbers and the addresses here and download the file. It is written in your browser, so nothing reaches us.

Your contact file

Leave anything blank and it is simply not in the file. The preview below is the file, exactly.

Your contact file

A contact needs a name. Fill in at least the first or the last one.

A field you leave blank writes no line at all, so the file never carries a placeholder. Nothing here is sent to us.

Step by step

How to make a vCard

Step 01

Fill in what you have

The name is the only part worth insisting on. Everything else is optional and an empty field writes no line at all.

Step 02

Read the preview

What you see under the form is the file itself, line for line. Commas, semicolons and backslashes in your own words are escaped for you.

Step 03

Download the .vcf

Open it on a phone and it offers to add the contact. Attach it to an email and the person on the other end gets the same offer.

Worth knowing

What is in the file

The file is vCard 3.0, the version phones and desktop address books agree on. The name is split into a first and a last part, each phone carries its own kind, and every line longer than seventy-five characters is folded the way the format requires.

A vCard is a snapshot. The person who saves it keeps the numbers you had on the day they saved it, and nothing tells them when one changes.

A card on a link is the other way round: they save the link, and what it shows is whatever you last typed. The same contact file is on it, always current, behind a Save contact button.

Clear answers

Questions about vCards

What is a .vcf file?

The standard contact file. A phone, a mail program or an address book opens one and offers to add the person to its contacts.

Will it open on an iPhone and on Android?

Yes. Both read vCard 3.0, which is what this makes. So do the common desktop mail programs.

Is anything I type sent to you?

No. The file is written by this page in your own browser and downloaded from there. Nothing is posted anywhere.

Can I put a photo in it?

Not in this tool. A photo has to be carried inside the file as encoded bytes, which is what a published card's own Save contact button does for you.

Why do my commas look odd in the preview?

They do not to a phone. A comma, a semicolon or a backslash has a meaning in the format, so each is written with a backslash in front of it and reads back as the character you typed.
