Print design

Design a card to print, move every piece by hand, and download the file a printer wants.

What is Print design?#

The paper half of your card. It takes the details you already typed and lays them out on a real card face, front and back, which you can download and have printed anywhere. It is free, there is no watermark, and you do not have to buy printing from us to use it.

How do I pick a design?#

Print design shows one card per design rather than a wall of near-identical recolours. Under each one is a row of colour swatches, and where a design offers more than one lettering pairing there is a row of those too. Filter by family or by type of business above the grid.

What card sizes are there?#

Four: 85 by 55 mm (most of the world), 3.5 by 2 inches (the United States and Canada), 90 by 54 mm (India) and 91 by 55 mm (Japan). Your country picks the one that is normal where you are, and you can change it. Every size is drawn with 3 mm of bleed and a 3 mm safe area.

What are bleed and the safe area?#

Bleed is the extra 3 mm of artwork past the cut line, so that a millimetre of drift in the guillotine does not leave a white sliver on the edge. The safe area is 3 mm inside the cut line: keep words and logos inside it and nothing important is ever trimmed off. Both are drawn for you on the canvas.

What can I download, and what should I send a printer?#

A print PDF, a PNG, an SVG and a print-at-home sheet. Send a printer the PDF: it is the card at its real size with bleed and crop marks. The PNG is handy for a screen or a chat; the SVG is for a designer who wants to open the shapes.

What is the canvas?#

The freeform half, linked from Print design. It opens on your saved design, or on your own template when you have not saved one, so the first thing you drag is your own card. You can drag, resize with eight handles, rotate, snap to the trim, the safe area, the centre lines and other pieces, align and distribute, change the stacking order, lock a piece, copy, delete, nudge with the arrow keys, zoom, and undo.

What can I put on the canvas?#

Words (choose from the fifteen bundled families with weight, size, colour, letter spacing, line spacing, alignment and capitals, and you can bind a piece of text to a detail of your card), pictures, shapes, lines, QR codes bound to one of your tracked links, and a background - a colour, a fade, a repeating pattern or a picture across the whole card.

How precise can I be?#

The arrow keys move a piece one millimetre at a time, and a tenth of a millimetre with Shift held. The inspector beside the canvas shows Position X and Position Y in millimetres, so you can type an exact number instead of aiming with the mouse.

Does the canvas work with a finger or a stylus?#

Mouse, finger and stylus all go through the same set of pointer handlers, so dragging behaves the same way on each. It is easier on a big screen, and nobody here has yet dragged it on a real phone for a whole design, so tell us if something feels wrong on yours.

Which lettering can I use, and will a printer have it?#

Fifteen families that we ship ourselves. Because the download has the shapes in it rather than a font name, a printer never has to own the lettering - the PDF carries what it needs.

If I bring my own artwork, what is checked?#

We read the file's real type from its bytes (PDF, PNG or JPEG, up to fifty megabytes), check the shape against the card size for that country, and check the resolution where it prints: 300 dots per inch or better passes, 200 to 299 gets a warning that it may look a little soft, and under 200 is held because it would come out blurry. A PDF is checked for embedded lettering and its page count, and a password-locked PDF is held. Colour is noted and never refused.

What is the proof?#

A picture of your card with the cut line and the safe area drawn over it and one plain sentence for each check, so you see exactly what a press will see before anybody prints it. You approve it in your own words, and the approved artwork stays on your order page afterwards.

Can you print and post the cards to me?#

Printed cards are made to order and shipped worldwide. Prices and delivery depend on the country, so the product page tells you plainly whether it can deliver to yours yet. If it cannot, the design and every download are still yours to take to a local printer. Besides the four papers there are four finishes: 450gsm Heavyweight Soft Touch Matte and Premium Cotton Uncoated 600gsm in packs of 100, 250, 500 or 1000, and Frosted Transparent Plastic with NFC Chip and Anodized Black Matte Aluminum NFC in packs of 25, 50 or 100. The two NFC cards have a chip inside: before we send them we write your own card's address on every chip, so a tap on a phone opens your card, and your order page shows the address we write.

Can I design the back of the card?#

Yes. Front and Back is a segmented control on the designer, and a two-sided card is printed from both faces. A QR code bound to a tracked link on the back is a neat way to bring a paper card back to your digital one.
