Wallet passes

Your card as a pass in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, with a message on its face.

What is a wallet pass?#

Your card as a pass inside the wallet app a phone already has - Apple Wallet on an iPhone, Google Wallet on Android. It sits beside the boarding passes and the loyalty cards, so it is two swipes away rather than buried in a browser. You edit the pass on the Wallet screen, and when you press Publish, the passes people have saved change too.

What is on the pass?#

Your name, your title and company, your phone and your email, a scan code that opens your card, and a Message field on the front that carries whatever you last sent. On the back: your website, your address, a line about the card and who runs the platform. Nothing about the person holding it is ever on it.

Who adds the pass, me or the visitor?#

The visitor. Your card page carries an Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Wallet button drawn with each company's own official badge, and one tap installs it. You never add a pass to somebody else's phone.

My Wallet screen says it is waiting to go live. Why?#

The pass itself is built and your own settings are saved, but a pass has to be signed with our Apple and Google credentials before a phone will take it, and that connection is being finished. Until it is done the screen shows a Waiting to go live badge and one line saying so. Save the card to the phone's home screen in the meantime - it works the same way.

What is on the Wallet screen?#

Counters for active passes, people holding your card, pinned places and location alert views; the pass editor, with Apple's template and Google's template drawn as forms so you type straight into the pass; a plain list of everything each platform lets you set, and a table of what only one of them has; the two Add buttons and the pass link; the message sender; and your pinned places.

What is the Message field for?#

One line on the front of the pass. When you send a message from the Wallet screen or from Notify, it lands there and the phone shows a banner. There is room for about two hundred characters, so it is a sentence, not a newsletter.

How often can I put a message on somebody's pass?#

Three times in twenty-four hours per pass, and the same per-person daily cap as any other message applies on top. Past the third, the message still reaches the pass but it stops ringing the phone. A pass that buzzes all day is a pass people delete.

Do wallet messages cost credits?#

Yes, exactly like any other message: one credit is one person reached, however the message got there. The counting happens in one place for all channels, so there is nothing separate to keep track of. See Notifications.

What is a pinned place?#

A spot on the map, with a label and a line of text. When the pass holder is near it, their phone can raise your card on the lock screen without you sending anything. Pin your shop, your stand at a fair, the building you work in. You can have one place, or up to ten with the places add-on.

How do I pin a place?#

Wallet, then Add a Place. Give it an address or a pair of coordinates, a name only you see so your list stays straight, and the line the lock screen should say. A pair of zeroes is refused, because that is a point in the Atlantic rather than anywhere anybody works.

Does a location alert spend a credit?#

No. The phone raises it, near the place you pinned. It is not a message we send, it spends no message credit and it is counted separately from your monthly credits and your packs.

If I change my card, does the pass change?#

No, and that is on purpose. A pass and a card are two different things: the pass says whatever you typed in the pass editor on the Wallet screen, and nothing is copied from your card. Change the pass there and press Publish, and the passes people are holding come back for the new words.

Can I choose what the pass shows?#

You choose all of it. Every slot Apple offers and every slot Google offers has a box in the editor on the Wallet screen, drawn where that platform draws it, and what you type is what goes into the real signed pass. Nothing is filled in for you, and nothing comes from your card. An instant push switch decides whether a change to your places nudges the phones at once.

Does the pass tell you where somebody is?#

No. The place is something you pin; the phone decides on its own whether the holder is near it, and it never reports back to us or to you. A pass holder's phone number, email or name is never written into a pass either.

What happens to a pass if my plan ends?#

Nothing at once. Ninety days after a plan ends the passes are retired and the phones are told once, so nobody is left holding a card that quietly stopped being true.

Can somebody remove the pass?#

Of course - it is their phone. They delete it in their wallet app like any other pass, and we hear about it and stop counting them as a live pass.
